Attacks in Belgium: We stand by Belgium and our freedoms

Brussels, 22 March 2016

Following the attacks in Belgium, the President of the European People’s Party, Joseph DAUL, made the following statement:

"I strongly condemn the multiple attacks at the Brussels Airport in Zaventem and the Maelbeek metro station in Brussels. I am deeply shocked and saddened by these tragic events. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. In these testing times, we stand by the people of Belgium.

We will not yield to terror and we will not let anybody undermine our freedom and our values in Europe. Today, the heart of Europe is under attack. An attack on Belgium is an attack on every European citizen. We must remain united to protect our democracies and what we stand for.

Today’s events only reaffirm the EPP’s conviction to continue to fight terrorism. We will work relentlessly until each one of us is safe. Only by acting together, can we protect the European citizens against such atrocities. Now more than ever, we need a strong common security policy to defend our people."
