Slovenia: EPP Presidency concerned over recent legal actions
Brussels, 28 June 2014
The Presidency of the European People's Party (EPP) has expressed its concern over certain legal actions, which may have an impact in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Slovenia. EPP President Joseph Daul commented:
"The EPP Presidency is concerned about the fact that after a series of recent judicial proceedings, opposition leader and former Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Janša, was sent to jail just three weeks prior to the 13 July parliamentary elections. Without prior exhaustion of all legal remedies available in the Republic of Slovenia, Mr. Janša was removed in the middle of the election campaign. Therefore, we hope that the Supreme Court of Slovenia will deliberate on the case as soon as possible."
Note to editors: The EPP is the largest and most influential European-level political party of the centre-right, which currently includes 73 member-parties from 39 countries, the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, 12 EU and 6 non-EU heads of state and government, 13 members of the European Commission and the largest Group in the European Parliament.
