Elections in Romania: EPP President urges support for Klaus Iohannis ahead of second-round voteBrussels, 3 November 2014
The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Joseph Daul, commented on the results of the first round of the presidential elections held yesterday, 2 November, in Romania:
“First of all, I would like to congratulate all of the Romanian centre-right parties on the results obtained in the first round of presidential elections, which took place yesterday. Following the results, I urge all EPP member parties in Romania to support Klaus Iohannis leading up to the run-off vote on 16 November. Yesterday’s results show that Klaus Iohannis is a strong and competitive candidate and that he has a solid basis for success in the vote that will take place in two weeks. I congratulate Klaus Iohannis on yesterday’s result and offer him my full support in advance of the final vote. I also appreciate the other EPP candidates who ran in this election and the results they obtained—Elena Udrea from the People’s Movement Party, Monica Macovei as a like-minded independent candidate, and Hunor Kelemen from the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania.
I reiterate the importance of mobilising centre-right voters across Romania and abroad in support of Klaus Iohannis. It is of crucial importance that the issues raised by the candidates of the other EPP parties also be addressed by Klaus Iohannis in the final stage of this election. The values for which Klaus Iohannis and our member parties have stood during this campaign are common to all members of our political family, and we must continue to support these going forward. The EPP member parties in Romania, PDL, PNL, PMP, RMDSZ and PNTCD, and the centre right, must stand united if we are to prevail on 16 November.” For more information:
